Blogging will be light to non-existent until I get settled, but I will be blowing off steam on Twitter.

I'm also taking a lot of pictures of things I will have to deaccession. My mother has been trying to throw away my grandfather's La-Z-Boy for ten years, and she will probably finally get her chance--but not until I get some more photos of the cats sleeping on it. I felt safe in that recliner, until one of the springs popped out of the bottom (probably in the 1960s they did not design furniture to hold fat people). Mostly, it's a strange sad "This is Your Life" in artifacts...a Krating Daeng bottle that I have at at least ten years and have moved at least six times, a half-dozen blank books that are still blank, a whole ream of software test plan print-outs that were too low on toner to use but the other side was blank for scratch paper! I should probably be boxing now and sorting later, but it's so crazy.

My dad says the lease thing is God kicking me in the ass so I do something different--and yeah, I have been stagnating.HRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-73156719947162531602015-02-26T02:00:00.000-05:002015-02-26T02:00:08.106-05:00Throwback Thursday: Radish the Great is Not a Role ModelFrom 2003, when I still made things bigger than a postcard.
Chilling the wort! WINTER IS AWESOME!

Ok, chilling the wort outside took a lot longer than I thought it would. Shoveled my driveway and it was only down to 140F. Shoveled my sidewalks and my neighbor's sidewalk and it was down to 120F. Went inside, watched Iowa State get their 20th win of the season. It took about 3.5 hours for the wort to get down around 75F.

Into the fermenter:
Easily the darkest-looking beer I've made so far.

Assistant Brewmaster Smokey* says "Hurry up and pitch the yeast so you can get my supper!"

My previous beers have all fermented in the front closet, but I'm leaving this one in a bathtub for easy cleanup, as I know from experience this yeast knows how to have a good time.

And the sun sets on another successful brew day.

Fiber-reactive dye is poured on snow piled atop scrunched-up fabric. As the snow melts, the dye comes in contact with the fabric; different rates of melting and different concentrations of dye create patterns.
I'm starting with some things that have been laying around unfinished, but I have a queue of new things as well.

First one is an interrobang, which I began in spring 2012 when I had a short fascination with obsolete typeset characters. It's comprised of two quilted layers--the background and the symbol are quilted and edged separately. They just had to be attached and beaded (the pins are not part of the quilt, it's too big to fit in my scanner so it's photographed on a wall).

The character was made using the technique of fusing tiny (less than 1") scraps, layering chiffon over them, and stitching the layers together to create a new fabric. I'm still looking for a snappy name for this technique so I can sell a book about it--but you can't copyright technique so please use it your own work and show me the results. :)

I also beaded this bit of bottle-cap shisha:

Mailed it to a dear friend last week. After 3.5 years here, I finally found a post office Friday before work. It wasn't open at 8 a.m. (who does business on a weekday during normal business hours, amirite?), but there was a self-serve kiosk, so in theory no problem...but the postage for the envelope was $0.98 and the minimum purchase was $1. I had a second envelope (an EBE going off to Minnesota), which would have made a total of $1.98, but the kiosk wouldn't let me weigh it for postage until the first envelope was paid for. I had to buy a 49¢ stamp that I did not want and have no need for to mail my envelope. Twice. Yay, government.

In other news, I'm thinking about my personal branding for future projects. "Still Life" is a great name for living alone in Indiana and working interminable overtime, but I'm starting to believe I won't be here forever (beer and cats? I'm keeping those!). So now, three years into the second job since that lay-off, they are finished!

I took it to my quilt guild last week; we didn't have a full show-and-tell so I didn't have to say anything, but a couple ladies asked me about them, and, "Well, they're aliens. We can't really understand them." They're still letting me come to the retreat.
FUZZbräu is the beer I make. This is my second attempt, a German-style wheat I call Fuzziwheat. My first was a Belgian wit style I called FUZZiwit (my German beer-drinking expert pronounced it "süffig" which I believe translates to "I did not go blind"). Currently in the fermenter is a second German-style wheat I will call FUZZirazz after I add three pounds of raspberry puree.

OK, naming things is not my best talent, which is why FUZZ named himself. OTOH, I am good at slogans. "FUZZbräu! Taste our disdain!"

It was delightfully chilly that day; I wore my new Mackintosh over my Milwaukee Brewers hoodie, and I really needed the hood for warmth on my first full day in central NY. I had purchased a book on the shores of Lake Ontario the night before after I got into town; I thought the lake might make a reasonable substitute for Lake Michigan but after a few long walks I loved it for itself.

The start of a new adventure.

Today in central Indiana it's too hot to go outside. But that is somehow OK, because there are no lakes or adventures. I bought a new blue and green shower curtain; it is not enough but it's all there is.HRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-29615748504617291442014-03-28T08:49:00.000-04:002014-03-28T08:53:23.983-04:00In Which I Almost Admit I Have A Problem, But Decide I Don't Have ToMy company is having a clothing and textile drive for a local organization that teaches "women in need" to sew and work retail--they sell the usable clothing and make stuff to sell from the rest. The organizer assured me they would take anything (FOOLS! I'll show them ALL!). I said "AHA! I can move out all those apparel fabric remnants and assorted used home furnishings I've been collecting for 15 years because I could make something from them some day and I'm starting to think it's never going to be someday!"

Do I even have to type the rest? I started opening boxes I haven't opened for at least three years, and immediately went "Oooh! This is awesome! And you can't buy fabric like this anymore! I could totally (if I bought some stabilizer and some different thread and took a week off work) make something from this! And this is real matelassé from that church rummage the year I taught that textile lab, I may never be able find affordable real matelassé again! I love this color, and it will never come back into fashion again..."

(I also have an ugly shirt I bought at a mall last summer because it was real swiss dot, with the dots woven in instead of glued on. Yup. It was $7; you couldn't buy a yard of real swiss dot for that in 1999....)

So my new goal is to move out at least half of it, and when the rest is still here unused when next year's clothing and textile drive rolls around, re-evaluate. The matelassé may persist, but the knit velveteen is already gone so I'm declaring victory.HRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-77833179824818903602014-03-26T07:45:00.002-04:002014-03-26T07:45:22.300-04:00Wordless WednesdayHRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-21736086982174529672014-03-09T18:07:00.001-04:002014-03-09T18:07:55.906-04:00NOOOOoooooooo!
I hate spring.

Made the year's first trip to the zoo today; the butterflies don't officially go on display until next week but there were a couple of early emergers out in the conservatory. The polar bear was offline, but the rhinos were little more active than usual.HRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-51588961653362355212014-03-05T21:28:00.002-05:002014-03-05T21:28:27.058-05:00Wordless WednesdayHRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-39004176909115047232014-03-01T08:22:00.000-05:002014-03-01T08:22:33.590-05:00CaturdayFile photo of Satan's Little Helper drinking my coffee, as he's trying to do right now:
He used to wait until it seemed I had finished before he would stick his face and paws in the mug, now I cannot leave my coffee unguarded...not even C2H6O-enhanced dessert decafs. At first I thought he just wanted the cream, but he ignored cream poured into his dish. And then he ignored coffee poured into his dish--it's gotta be in a mug. My mug. Of course.HRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-13628406847235374052014-02-26T02:00:00.000-05:002014-02-26T02:00:04.577-05:00Wordless WednesdayHRhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05288814615785426195noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7245793069808696313.post-74835989087551934922014-02-25T19:46:00.001-05:002014-02-25T19:50:08.863-05:00Mixed-technique ValentineOnly two weeks late! Good thing the cats don't care (not to mention I could work faster if they didn't insist on sitting on my hands every time I sit down to work).

I need to devise a name for the technique where I fuse little (about 1/2") scraps from another project to a backing fabric, then layer with a sheer fabric and machine stitch. It's not original, but if I give it an original name I can sell it (except I will never make a critical mass of these things, because I really only use scraps from other projects--I don't want to turn a yard of good fabric into 1/2" scraps--and it takes an astonishingly long time to fuse them all down flat with no background showing).

But I like this mixed-technique look, and love the flower sequins.

And The E.B.E. Project rolls on. This one says his name is Melvin.
